🍲 Doris Taylor
Doris Taylor helped turn an argument for dignity and independence into Meals on Wheels, with its first South Australian kitchen opening at Port Adelaide in 1954. Living with disability herself, she understood why older and less mobile people might want to remain in familiar homes. The service joined reliable meals with human contact, relying on volunteers and practical local support. Her campaigning took the idea to councils and governments beyond the original kitchen. Port Adelaide was the place where that vision became a working service, demonstrating that a delivery could carry reassurance and conversation as well as lunch.
🎼 Leila Rankine and Catherine Ellis
Ngarrindjeri poet and musician Leila Rankine worked with ethnomusicologist Catherine Ellis to establish the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music in 1972. Its early programme was based in Port Adelaide, creating opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to develop and express themselves through music. People came from widely separated communities, bringing different traditions and ambitions. The initiative helped make musical education a place of cultural expression and practical opportunity. Rankine and Ellis supplied complementary experience, and their Port Adelaide beginning became the foundation for an institution whose influence extended across generations of performers.
👮 Peter McAulay
Peter McAulay was born at Alberton in 1932 and attended the local primary school. After working as a junior audit clerk, he joined South Australia Police in 1951 and was posted to Port Adelaide Police Station in 1953. Later service included United Nations policing in Cyprus and leadership of the Northern Territory Police and Australian Federal Police. He introduced organisational reforms and encouraged investigations of alleged police corruption, while major disputed criminal cases also formed part of his years in senior command. Alberton and Port Adelaide provide a direct local beginning through birth, schooling and his early police posting.
